Poverty headcount ratio

Definition

Poverty headcount ratio at $2.15 a day is the percentage of the population living on less than $2.15 a day at 2017 international prices. As a result of revisions in PPP exchange rates, poverty rates for individual countries cannot be compared with poverty rates reported in earlier editions.

Relevance

Poverty is an important driver of the food system as it influences the accessibility and affordability of food. It can also influence the ability of small- and medium-scale farmers, distributors, and retailers to establish sustainable businesses. Poverty also impacts all health outcomes associated with the food system including, but not limited to, food insecurity and malnutrition.
