Definition

Proportion of the population age 15 years and older who consumed a sugar-sweetened soft drink during the previous day or night. Sugarsweetened soft drinks include soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks.

Relevance

Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are a large source of free sugars; WHO recommends added sugars be limited to less than 10% of total energy. Excessive consumption may increase the risk of overweight and obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases.
