Percent intact area

Calculation

Biological intact areas are those where three out of four models of human modification agree the impact is low or null (the four models considered include: Human Footprint, Low Impact Areas, Global Human Modification Index, and CSIRO Habitat Condition.

Definition

Intact area indicates the percentage of the national land considered as "pristine" natural habitat.

Relevance

Intact area is encroached by agriculture and livestock production. Maintaining at least 50% of the ecoregions as intact is a planetary boundary proposed for guaranteeing ecosystems integrity and functioning.
