Stunting and overweight in children under 5 years

Calculation

Numerator: number of children under 5 years falling below -2 standard deviations from the median height for age and falling at or above +2 standard deviations from the median weight-for-height of the reference population. Denominator: children under 5 years of age in the surveyed population.

Definition

Percentage of children under 5 years who are both stunted and overweight.

Relevance

Stunting and overweight are indicators of chronic malnutrition. Children who experience both may be consuming diets that lack essential nutrients but are calorically dense.
